How this works

Ride information rots. A club posts a weekly ride, people turn up for years, and then one day it stops — and nothing on the internet changes. The listing stays up. Someone reads it two years later, rides across town in the dark, and stands alone at the meet point.

Roll Call exists for that person.

The four states

  • ActiveSomeone has called roll recently — how recently depends on how often the ride runs.
  • UnconfirmedNo roll call in about three times round. Has anyone ridden this?
  • Off-seasonOutside its season window. Expected dormancy, not a warning.
  • EndedThis ride ended. The reason is recorded on the page.

Status is computed when you load the page — never stored, never a nightly job. One roll call keeps a ride green, and how long it stays green depends on how often the ride runs: about 21 days for a weekly ride, 45 days fortnightly, 100 days monthly. Roughly three times round, whatever round means for that ride. A flat number would call a healthy monthly ride stale before it had a second chance to be confirmed, and let a weekly one coast for six weeks. A series is judged against its own season instead. Off-season is deliberately separate from Unconfirmed: a ride that only runs in summer is not rotting in January, it is asleep.

One-time events get two states of their own

A ride that only happens once — a proposed century, a one-off social — cannot answer "does it still meet." It either hasn't happened yet or it has, so it gets its own pair instead of being forced through the freshness logic above.

  • UpcomingA one-time event that hasn’t happened yet.
  • PastA one-time event that already happened.

Defunct rides stay

When a ride ends, it does not get deleted. It gets a reason. An obituary with the story of why the ride stopped is more useful to the next person than a blank where the listing used to be — and it is often the only record that survives.

Points, and what they are for

Every point rewards data the map needs. There is no score for showing up, posting, or being popular.

Comments are worth zero on purpose. Talk is free; data is points. Comments still matter — they carry everything that does not fit a form field.

Reading is free

You never need an account to look anything up. An account is only for contributing: calling roll, adding a ride, verifying details, posting a schedule change, commenting, flagging something wrong.

Where the current data came from

The rides listed today were gathered from published club schedules and community ride lists, and every one carries its sources in its changelog. That means almost all of them are marked unverified — the site is telling you it read something on a web page, not that a rider confirmed it. That is the honest starting position, and it is what the rides that need help page exists to fix.
